Artytechs, a leading architectural firm in Georgia, is making significant strides in the architectural landscape, distinguished by the diverse expertise of its managing partners. Founded just a decade ago, the company has garnered significant recognition, claiming 25 international awards, including the domestic Golden Brand award in the category “Architecture, Projecting, Design.”
What sets Artytechs apart is its profound commitment to honoring Georgian history through its projects. Each endeavor seamlessly marries artistry with a vision that respects the past while confidently embracing the future. The firm has become synonymous with not just architectural brilliance, but also a deep-seated respect for cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, Artytechs has set its sights on international expansion, determined to maintain the cultural and historical essence of Georgian architecture. As they navigate the complexities of the contemporary world, the team remains steadfast in its mission of elevating Georgian architecture on the global stage.
Co-founder and architect Daduna Shatashvili beautifully encapsulated the firm’s ethos, stating, “We are the children of Georgia. With each project, we proudly carry our heritage forward.”
Q. What distinguishes Artytechs from other architectural firms?
A. Artytechs distinguishes itself from other architectural firms through the diverse professional backgrounds of its managing partners. The company is led not only by architects but also by professionals with a variety of experience, allowing us to provide comprehensive services to our clients. In a relatively short time, Artytechs has carved out a place in the international market, earning 25 international awards and producing numerous high-profile projects that are recognized by the public.
Having been in operation for 10 years, the growth of Artytechs has been the result of hard work and dedication. Over the years we have faced many challenges, including the impact of the pandemic, which affected every sector — but through perseverance and our commitment to core values, we were able to quickly recover lost ground.
Initially, the company was developed by Aleksandre Burchuladze and myself, who had huge experience in managing successful projects. In 2017, Archil Dzidziguri joined our team to lead the marketing division and continues to drive the company’s development in this area. In 2023 we welcomed Konstantine Ghvinjilia, who previously headed the Old Tbilisi Permit Department at the Tbilisi Municipality’s Architecture Service. By that time, his combined experience in both the private and public sectors had reached five years, significantly contributing to Artytechs’s progress.
Q. Over the years the company has received more than 25 international awards, including the Golden Brand award. But one of the most significant recognitions is the A’Design Award, which the company won for its project of a boutique hotel in Abastumani, Georgia. When working on this project, did you anticipate it would achieve such success?
A. I would definitely highlight this award, as only the creators of outstanding projects are eligible to receive it. Being selected among the top 300 out of 200,000 participants worldwide is truly remarkable. The prestige of this award is further underscored by the increased visibility and status it brings to the architect. Membership in the World Design Consortium, which includes the best architects and designers globally, is another benefit. Following the award, around 200 articles about our project were published by various international outlets, and we even launched a personal website to enhance our profile, which continues to grow daily.
The meaningful connections and heightened international recognition that come with this award are the greatest achievements, and I take immense pride in that. I hope all architects experience similar success, as it brings a unique sense of joy as a reward for hard work.
As for the Abastumani Boutique Hotel, it is truly a distinctive project characterized by its individualism. It incorporates a blend of various architectural styles, which is a hallmark of my work. The story of this project began when I saw the ruins of the existing cattle shed. I envisioned preserving these ruins while integrating modern elements, which inspired me to incorporate Georgian-themed balconies during the design process. This led to a fascinating architectural project that reflects my unique style.
I never anticipated that this project would achieve such recognition. Coming from a small country like Georgia, it brings great pride to see our work garner attention on the global stage as a unique example of architecture. We are thrilled to read “From Georgia” attached to our projects in different countries. Representing Georgia, we find ourselves alongside the greatest architects from Italy, Japan, Spain, and the United States. It’s remarkable to think that we, along with Norman Foster – another winner in a different category – competed and succeeded in an international competition in 2020.
Q. What was the most memorable project you worked on, that perhaps left a special mark on you? For example, I remember the Avlabari multifunctional complex in Tbilisi, which was a novelty and very distinctive at that time.
A. All projects are memorable and precious, much like children. I find it impossible to discuss architecture without emotion; it is an integral part of my life. I constantly develop ideas in my mind, no matter where I am or what I’m doing. Among my projects, I would definitely highlight the Avlabari multifunctional complex because it was my first large-scale project completed independently. I nurtured it like a child, and I am still proud of the outcome. This project was developed during my time at Magi Style company, where I gained significant experience that has been invaluable for my work on future projects. I’m glad you mentioned the Avlabari multifunctional complex; it has made a lasting impact on Georgian architecture, withstanding the test of time and still being regarded as one of the best complexes.
Among the outstanding projects from Artytechs, I would single out the Museum Hotel in Tbilisi and the Georgian Alphabet Tourist Center. Both of these projects draw on Georgian national motifs, which gives me a sense of fulfillment, as I feel I am creating something valuable to our country.
I want to emphasize that Artytechs develops all its projects using modern technologies.
Q. What are your near-term goals and your vision for the development of Artytechs?
A. Artytechs has ambitious plans for growth, including expansion into international markets. At every stage of our development, we set new goals for ourselves, and we are never content with what we have achieved. Pursuing new challenges is an integral part of Artytechs’s journey.
One of our greatest aspirations is to represent our country by creating as many interesting projects as possible within Georgia. We are committed to preserving the unique historical features and rich cultural heritage that we take pride in. The preservation and proper development of Georgian national culture are among Artytechs’s primary objectives. As devoted citizens of Georgia, we believe that Artytechs will play a significant role in the country’s development.
